I intentionally paired these two sculptures together for a purpose. They differ in size noticeably. Both display a mix of rough and smooth surfaces, yet the rough textures are situated in distinct areas on each sculpture, giving them unique qualities. Their colors and shapes also set them apart from one another. In the midst of the racial and political tensions gripping our nation, I aimed to convey that deep down, we are fundamentally alike. Does it truly make a difference to our ultimate existence on this Earth whether we are Black or White, Democrat or Republican, affluent or impoverished, tall or short? If there is one thing we have gleaned from the past months of this pandemic, it is that in the end, when we are laid to rest six feet under, we are all equal. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Carved in 2010 in Alabaster.
