The figure on the left sits rigid and erect. The figure on the right is bent forward. They are close, knee to knee. But are they listening to one another or are they each stuck in their own thoughts, perceptions and feelings? Is the figure on the right bending forward to better hear their partner, or is she/he/they bent forward in submission, having given up on their ability to be heard? This past year has taught me one thing: no matter how our political persuasion, religion, race or whatever has been tearing us apart, we need to bend forward and truly listen to the “other” or we will be lost as a nation. Put down that phone, drop the laptop for a second and listen to the people around you. You may learn something about them, or better yet, you may learn something about yourself.
