Description:
I owned a cherished pair of penny loafers in the seventies that I frequently wore at a time in my life when the world was at my feet and the possibilities seemed endless.
- Robin Antar
The penny loafer originated in the early 1930s when an American shoe company introduced a slip-on shoe inspired by Norwegian fishermen's moccasins. The distinctive strap across the front soon became associated with the placement of a penny which was often inserted as a form of personal expression and rumored to serve as emergency phone call money in pre-cellphone days. The shoe became a symbol of preppy style, popularized by Ivy League students in the fifties and sixties and remains a staple of men’s and women’s wardrobes today.
